Desmond Dekker and the Aces were one of the
first Ska/Reggae acts to break into the
international Music scene with their hits:
007 Shantytown (featured in the film
“the harder they come”), & The Isrealites.
Desmond's unique style of music has permeated
Into the American Music culture and has made
it's way into popular Pop music of our time.
Queen Latifah sings “u-n-i-t-y is unity” in
Her early hit, by the same name… An homage to
Desmond Dekker's song “unity”
In the beatles “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da (Life Goes On)”
the character “Desmond/in the market place” is
a reference to Desmond Dekker.

Abe, Why didn't I make the list?! I started it!
And curt, no hard feelings. I think you got the wrong idea. We are all buddies here and we have discussions here... about ska and stuff. We weren't trying to be "elitist drama queen bitches".
I honestly didn't even know it was you wrote that thing. It sounded like some cut-and-paste music biz PR to me, and thats why I was criticizing. I'm sick of the all the popular music media outlets trivializing the "real" accomplishments of these legendary Jamaican artists. It certainly is a sad day in ska when just saying "desmond dekker" doesn't get people excited. But I suppose that is the reality of the situation. |
